My name is Kaly Gillette Shippen and IdahoHoops.net is my “home court” on the web. I have a passion for the game of basketball that I love to share. I don’t have any brothers in my family, but I grew up trying to keep up with my cousins Ryan and Austin who also
graduated from Minico in 1996 and were starters on the boys basketball team. Along with my dad, I give them a lot of credit for my love of the game.
I had the opportunity to play ball at Ricks College, San Diego State, and BYU. My favorite season was 1997-98 when our Ricks team went 33-3 and finished 5th in the nation. I always looked forward to going to practice
that year, even when I knew it would be tough, because I enjoyed being around my teammates and coaches so much. Being in that kind of supportive environment taught me how powerful it was to be on a team of individuals that truly wanted the best for one another and were committed to a common goal.
I remember a quote Coach Woodland shared with us early in the season,
“We will be more successful united on a bad idea than divided on a good one.”
So true. I think parents need to hear that quote as much as the players. If parents have concerns about a coach they need to talk to the coach. Parental negativity about other players on a team or about a coach really impacts a team’s unity.
Basketball is a family affair at my house. My husband Ty loves basketball even more than I do. He’s the x’s and o’s guy. I am amazed at his ability to remember the intricacies of offenses and defenses he learned years ago. He was a star player at Rigby High School and went on to play basketball at Ricks College, BYU, and University of Alaska-Anchorage. Now he is a high school counselor and varsity coach at Skyline High School. I usually ask the kids to call me “Coach K” or “Coach Kaly” because it just doesn’t sound right to be called “Coach Shippen”, since that’s what everybody calls Ty.
I have a Bachelors Degree in social science teaching, (which I used when I was teaching 8th Graders in Anchorage, Alaska), and a Masters in Instructional Technology from BYU, (which I use every day!) The most fun job I ever had was teaching a two hour basketball class at BYU-Idaho on Fridays a couple of years ago. Not to take anything away from my current job as the marketing director for NAI Commerce One Commercial Real Estate, LLC, but seriously, how can you beat a two hour basketball class for BYU-I students? I was in heaven.
Ty and I have three awesome kids who keep us very busy. My favorite thing to do in the winter is watch basketball. My favorite thing in the summer is to waterski, wakeboard, or golf–so please call me anytime if you have a boat or a tee time…and a babysitter!
